Clinical Pharmacology

Taxotere® (docetaxel) is a semisynthetic derivative of a compound isolated from the needles of the European yew tree (Taxus baccata).1 It was identified in 1986 as an alternative to paclitaxel and comes from a renewable resource.

The unique chemical structure of Taxotere® contains two modifications relative to paclitaxel

  • A hydroxy group replacing an acetyl group at C-10
  • C-13 side chain variations

Research has demonstrated that these structural changes confer enhanced solubility in aqueous solution.*
