(also called study) comparing Taxotere® + prednisone to the chemotherapy regimen of mitoxantrone + prednisone in the treatment of androgen-independent prostate cancer, men receiving Taxotere® + prednisone experienced advantages like the following:
- Longer median survival
- Lower risk of death
- Fewer treatment discontinuations due to prostate cancer progression

Taxotere® Chemotherapy Proven Effective and Well-Tolerated in Androgen-Independent Prostate Cancer Study
Taxotere® plus prednisone received approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA
) to treat men with androgen-independent prostate cancer, a type of advanced prostate cancer that has stopped responding to hormonal therapy
.
This FDA approval was based on a study that proved the superior efficacy of Taxotere® + prednisone compared to the chemotherapy regimen of mitoxantrone + prednisone in treating AIPC.
Taxotere® + prednisone demonstrated the following advantages over mitoxantrone + prednisone:
- Longer survival
- 24% reduced risk of death
- More patients receiving Taxotere® + prednisone completed their course of treatment (9.5 out of 10 treatment cycles completed).
- Only 37.9% of men receiving Taxotere® + prednisone had to discontinue treatment because of their cancer progression vs. 56.4% of men receiving mitoxantrone + prednisone.
- 20% of men receiving mitoxantrone + prednisone crossed over to the Taxotere® + prednisone group.
- Taxotere® + prednisone was well-tolerated in men age 65 and older.
- Only 10.7% of men receiving Taxotere® + prednisone needed to stop treatment due to side effects.
