Taxotere® Chemotherapy Proven Effective and Well-Tolerated in Androgen-Independent Prostate Cancer Study

Taxotere® plus prednisone received approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA ) to treat men with androgen-independent prostate cancer, a type of advanced prostate cancer that has stopped responding to hormonal therapy .

This FDA approval was based on a study that proved the superior efficacy of Taxotere® + prednisone compared to the chemotherapy regimen of mitoxantrone + prednisone in treating AIPC.

Taxotere® + prednisone demonstrated the following advantages over mitoxantrone + prednisone:

  • Longer survival
  • 24% reduced risk of death
  • More patients receiving Taxotere® + prednisone completed their course of treatment (9.5 out of 10 treatment cycles completed).
    • Only 37.9% of men receiving Taxotere® + prednisone had to discontinue treatment because of their cancer progression vs. 56.4% of men receiving mitoxantrone + prednisone.
    • 20% of men receiving mitoxantrone + prednisone crossed over to the Taxotere® + prednisone group.
    • Taxotere® + prednisone was well-tolerated in men age 65 and older.
    • Only 10.7% of men receiving Taxotere® + prednisone needed to stop treatment due to side effects.

Like all Chemotherapy Drugs Taxotere® chemotherapy may cause side effects. For more information, visit the Taxotere® Side Effects page in this section.
