Taxotere® Chemotherapy Benefits: Gastric Cancer
Taxotere® (docetaxel
) chemotherapy
in combination with cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil (also called 5-FU) is the first FDA-approved treatment regimen in more than a decade to prolong the lives of people with gastric (stomach) cancer and cancer of the gastroesophageal (GE) junction.
Taxotere® offers many benefits to people living with gastric cancer. In a clinical trial
(also called study) comparing the chemotherapy regimen
of Taxotere® + cisplatin + 5-FU (TCF) to the historical standard regimen of cisplatin + 5-FU (CF) in the treatment of gastric cancer and cancer of the gastroesophageal (GE) junction, people receiving TCF experienced advantages like the following:
- Improved survival 9.2(TCF) vs 8.6(CF) months
- Tumor
shrinkage
- Lower risk of disease progression in patients receiving (TCF) 5.6 vs (CF) 3.7 months

Taxotere® Chemotherapy Proven Effective in Gastric Cancer Study
Taxotere® plus cisplatin and 5-FU received approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA
) for the first-line
treatment of advanced gastric adenocarcinoma
(including the area where the stomach and esophagus connect).
This FDA approval was based on a study that proved the effectiveness of Taxotere® + cisplatin + 5-FU (TCF) compared to the chemotherapy regimen of cisplatin + 5-FU (CF).
The Taxotere®-based regimen, TCF, demonstrated the following advantages over CF:
- Improved survival: Many people receiving TCF lived longer 9.2(TCF) vs 8.6(CF) months.
- 22% reduced chance of death from the cancer.
- Tumor shrinkage 11.3% more people responded to TCF compared to CF.
- Lower risk of disease progression: More people receiving TCF had a lower risk of their cancer progressing. For those who did experience cancer progression, the progression was delayed longer than progression in people receiving CF.
- Greater ability to tolerate chemotherapy treatment: More people receiving TCF stayed on treatment longer.
